Working Europe’s Largest Hospital Network

Background: Leeds Teaching Hospitals, a cornerstone of the NHS trust network, faced a pivotal challenge in evolving their prescribing and medication administration practices. The shift from paper to digital was not just a technical upgrade but a step forward in patient safety and care efficiency.

Objective: The goal was to introduce the Emeds system, enhancing electronic prescribing and medication administration to replace legacy paper processes, thereby aiming to boost clinical safety, elevate patient care standards, and meet compliance requirements.

KEY CHALLENGES

  • Every department of the hospital group affected
  • Multiple systems affected
  • Limited knowledge from staff as the hospital was one of the first to launch this system
  • I’m an not clinically knowledgeable or qualified

Creating the solution – In depth

Contribution and Solution:

  • Inclusive Planning and Engagement:

Initiated with a project plan that brought together diverse hospital stakeholders, aiming to harmonize goals and expectations through collective insight.

  • Tailored System Customization and Integration:

With a focus on customization, the Emeds system was adapted to align with the hospital’s unique workflows, ensuring it complemented existing clinical systems to offer a comprehensive patient care tool.

  • Training and Empowerment:

Contributed to the development and delivery of a training program for over 3,000 healthcare professionals. The training materials, designed to accommodate the varied learning preferences of doctors, nurses, and pharmacists, not only facilitated initial learning but also served as the foundation for ongoing eLearning platforms, remaining in use to this day.

  • Supportive Change Management:

Embraced a supportive role in the change management process, aiding staff through the transition with clear, empathetic communication and a structured support system to address concerns and adapt to feedback.

THE RESULTS

  • We successfully reduced medication errors by a significant margin, enhancing patient safety and care quality.
  • The project led to improved operational efficiency, with clinicians reporting reduced administrative burdens and more time for direct patient care.
  • Achieved high levels of system adoption and satisfaction among staff, thanks to effective training and support efforts.
  • Ensured data accuracy and compliance with healthcare regulations, facilitating better clinical decision-making.

This experience underscored my ability to manage complex healthcare IT projects, demonstrating strong project management, technical proficiency, and a deep commitment to enhancing patient care through technology.
